Why is Tybee Island such a great place to visit? Well we know how to have a good time. We throw many activities throughout the year to get the community together and to attract business to our island year around. One of the best times to visit to relax is in the winter season. November through February the beach is so peaceful and it is one of the best times to go fishing especially in November. Try one of the inshore charters for a great time on my services page. Also camping at the Tybee Island Campground is much better by a warm fire on a chilly night.
When you visit we have many activities such as parasailing, kayaking, fishing, boating, beach bumming, and night clubing (Well we have a great night life on Tybee and "The Crab" Tybee's Taxi is only a call away.)
Tybee Island History
Tybee Island is an island city located along the atlantic coast of Georgia. It has been known as Savannah's beach because of it's location close to Savannah. Tybee Island is a vacation getaway for people all over the world. It is known for it's beautiful beach and waterways. Tybee Island has some historic monuments such as the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Old Fort Screven. Also Fort Pulaski a civil war fort is found just as your leaving Tybee Island on Cockspur Island. During the civil war the Union army placed seige batteries along the northern end of Tybee Island that aided in there successful capture of Fort Pulaski in 1862. Fort Screven was first commissioned in 1899 and served as a valuable coastal defense until 1947.
Tybee Island was at one time inhabited by the Euchee American Indian Tribe well before 1500 when the Spanish explorers arrived. Tybee is the Euchee word for "Salt" therefore Tybee Island meaning Salt Island from the original inhabitants.
In 1520 the Spanish claimed Tybee Island as part of its territory of Spanish Florida and named Tybee Island "Los Bajas". During that time the Island was frequented by pirates for a fresh water source and as a hiding spot. By 1670 the British, Pirates,Spanish and Native Americans all fought among the area for control. By 1704 James Moore of South Carolina with the help of Native Americans and a fleet of Pirates invaded the area and pushed back the Spanish to the St. Augustine FL area. At this time the area was depopulated until the English settlers of James Oglethorpe in 1733.
Tybee Island is known today for its boating, fishing, beach, pier and pavilion, and festivities year around. Tybee Island comes to live in the summer time when vistors visit from all over the world and enjoy renting umbrellas and chairs along Tybee Island's beach. Tybee Island has many fun events from Beach Bum parade, St. Patricks Day Parade, Pirate Fest, Hog fest, 4th of July Celebration and many more events put on by local groups and organizations.
Tybee Island has mostly residential homes and condos with there unique archecticual style with most of its business along Hwy 80 and near Tybrisa Streets downtown district at the southend of the Island. The southend of the island has most of the night clubs and motels on the Island. The City has two designated parks for events and recreation. Also the pier and pavilion is the hot spot for both the beach goers and surfers with the designated surfing area between Tybrisa and 18th Street.
